guess who's going to Missouri!
a workshop, folks. not moving. don't worry. :)
in my "thinking about what i had written last night" moment in the shower today, i realized that i should add in this small tidbit of impulsiveness that i'm currently seriously considering, to give you a sense of how grand my impulses can be.
i got an email update from photography at the summit, which is this intensive photography workshop out west in the spring and fall. the main summit program isn't what i'm interested in though - it's the sports photography program. it's $1000 tuition, and then adding together transportation, lodging, food, supplies, etc. . . the grand total is probably around $2000. and i really want to go.
really = the point where i'm checking out flights to Colorado Springs, thinking about applying with my deposit and then taking the time between now and May 1st to figure out if i *actually* can go. i'm mentally trying to figure out how i can afford to go, how i can earn extra cash, if i can take that time off work, will it be worth it, all that jazz.
i've been feeling the pull lately (see previous post) . . . or at least the nagging feeling . . . that i really only want to be one thing: a photographer. i don't think it has anything to with greener grass . . . mostly because this is a thought i keep coming back to. it's a life i almost had, and breifly lived on a part-time basis. it's something that drives me to think creatively, and pursue knowledge and skills and experience. it's something that inspires me, something that makes me feel alive.
the workshop mentioned above would be equivelant to taking a college course in "sports photojournalism" combined with "the business of being a photographer" all in one. it's an opportunity to work with some of the best in the business, to learn how to be one of the best in the business . . . while photographing Olympic atheletes at their training facilities. where else can you get that kind of subject?
if you're wondering where my desire for attending the sports workshop is coming from . . . remember, i got my start as a photojournalist shooting sports for my college paper, and then for my local community paper.
standing there on the turf of Giants Stadium, sick as a dog in 25 degree weather, carrying 20lbs of digital and film equpiment with me, running up and down the sidelines chasing high school champion football plays . . . i knew then and there that my dream was to shoot for Sports Illustrated, the NFL, the Associated Press . . . anyone running professional sports. i wanted to be there, on the sidelines, in the middle of the action, among the best of the best.
i felt it in my bones, and i haven't let go.
perhaps this workshop could be an amazing stepping stone.
or it could end up to be a waste of money.
anyone have any suggestions / recommendations / advice?
