What's the best April Fools' Day prank you've ever had pulled on you?
Courtesy of Team Vox.
VOX saying they're phasing out the Question of the Day and VoxHunt!
nice try guys . . . you're *not* serious, right? no one's serious on the internet on April Fool's Day . . .
Tell us two truths and a lie about yourself.
well, since a bunch of you have done this, i figure it's my turn too. (and i promise, the 10-things post is coming too . . . soon.)
1. i think guys who wear eyeliner are hot. there's just something about the tall-and-skinny emo-punk look with the dark spikey or long-ish dramatic hair, eyeliner, tight black or salvation army-vintage looking clothes, and possibly even a spike choker (the little spikes, not the big 'impale me' spikes) that's just so yum.
2. i think watermellon and cucumbers taste exactly the same. and i can't stand either of them.
3. i didn't learn to read until 1st grade. when the rest of the class had their regular lessons, i'd have to sit in the 'reading corner' with another kid and have our own study time to try and catch us up with the rest of the class. it was quite embarrassing, and the other kids used it against me in their public dislike of me. kids are mean.
alrighty! which is the lie, and which are truths!
i know you guys can figure this out.
What is your current obsession(s)?

and most likely, this album will become your obsession, too.
What's a leap of faith to you? Have you ever taken one?
i've been sitting here, thinking about how to answer this question, for easily 15 or 20 minutes. there's so many ways i could take this. literally, figuratively, emotionally, physically . . .
almost every day is a leap of faith.
we get in our cars, drive among thousands to get to our jobs, our childrens' schools, down the street to the supermarket . . . every day, we're trusting everyone else on the road to not hit us while they talk on their cell phones, eat their lunch, or drop their chapstick. most days, we're okay. occasionally . . . not.
we go to restaurants and cafes, some for every meal, eating everything from the overly cooked to the underly raw . . . every day, we're trusting everyone from short order cooks with little training to gourmet chefs with years of culinary school to prepare food for us blindly. most days, we're okay. occasionally . . . not.
we develop romantic relationships, sometimes with people we've known for a while and consider friends, sometimes with complete strangers . . . every day, we're trusting them with the details of our lives and the insides of our hearts without truly knowing their intentions. most days, we're okay. occasionally . . . not.
if we consciously thought about each of these situations every time we got in the car, ate out, or went on a date, we would be inundated with paranoia. while some may be able to handle it better than others, we would devolve into a society of shut-ins, afraid to leave our homes or trust anyone but ourselves.
so instead, we venture out into the world, and hope by doing right ourselves, others will follow.
sometimes we get into fender benders.
and sometimes we get food poisoning.
and sometimes we end up with heartbreak.
but all the time, we're putting our trust into each other.
and many times, we emerge successful.
safe, full, and loved.
almost every day is a leap of faith.
who are you trusting today?

Who
taughtinspired you [learn] how to cook?
Submitted by Donna.
seeing that i still don't cook very well . . . i'm going to give you some of the people behind my inspiration to learn to cook!

- alton brown : the man, the myth, the mystery . . . also known as "my other boyfriend" (not that i have any others at the current moment.) without him, i wouldn't know i could eat yogurt, or that you need two ladders and an intricate pulley system to deep-fry a turkey safely.

- rachael ray : between her non-stop banter and her 30-minute meals, what's not to love about rachael! (nore: i have not seen her talk show, and nor do i want to. i don't want to spoil my happiness.)
- websites: rachel ray, food network bio, 30 minute meals, $40 a day
- books: there's too many to list!

- warren brown : a DC native, whom i had the pleasure to meet one random evening at his cafe, LoveCafe. he's mostly inspired my expedition into baking, and keep your eyes peeled for news of my attendance at one of his baking classes in the near future.
- websites: cakelove, food network bio, sugar rush
- classes: intro and specialty classes in silver spring, md
other food network faces that entertain and inspire:
- giada delaurentis
- ina garten (i love the way she talks during her show.)
- duff goldman (ace of cakes)
- bobby flay
- michael chiarello
yay to food network!
What is your favorite kind of bagel and what do you put on it?
Submitted by Nacwolin.
that's a loaded question for me. here's a list of the top few bagel choices and typical toppings.
bagels (assuming we're talking about ronnie's bagels)
- oatmeal raisin
- cinnamon raisin
- pumpernicle (raisin if available)
- marble rye
- egg
- blueberry
spreads
- plain cream cheese
- plain cream cheese with fresh lox
- lox spread
- olive cream cheese (i swear, it's good!)
- soynutbutter and jelly (can't eat peanuts)
another combination i used to really like was salt bagel and plain cream cheese, but lately, the salt is just too much for me.
We know you never slack off at work, but if you did, what would you do?
are you serious?
read my last QotD.
i'll leave it at that, for the sake of anyone reading.
but when i'm home, slacking off on cleaning or laundry or something, here's a list of sites i like to frequent on my macbook.
facebook
myspace
craigslist (i love me some r&r every so often.)
the washington post
wil wheaton's blog
towwas's blog
eBay
my website's stalking profile
nppa (national press photographers association)
local weather
livejournal
gmail (and the calendar program thingy)
meebo (really, this is used "elsewhere".)
dpreview (because i'm obsessed with cameras)
many of the other things i end up reading come from links through other people's blogs and such. well, i'd say most of it does. i've been told i need to find some web comics, but i don't know where to start. i also feel like there's many other things out there that would be interesting to read about. again, where to start?
(yes that's a request for fun and entertaining links.)
link me!
What's the most obsessive-compulsive thing you do in a normal day?
Submitted by Nikki.
vox.
i vox. i write on vox. i read on vox. i search on vox. i explore on vox.
then i write some more on vox.
there's a ton more things i do, since i've got ocd about many, many things . . . but really, the most important (and productive) is VOX.
What are your resolutions for 2007?
- to be more confident.
- to take an active role in my life.
- to continue having new adventures.
- to make the most of this new life i've created here in washington, dc.
i've been doing pretty well so far in 2006 with these little goals, and for those of you who know me, you know that it's not always the easiest thing for me to do. i get really down and out about myself, and feel like i'm not good enough all the time. well, it used to be all the time. not so much anymore, but i still let it get to me sometimes.
so, i guess this isn't a new resolution but a re-affirmation of the feelings that hit me on the side of Masada in israel last year. you would think it to be kinda cliche . . . standing on the side of this 2000+ year old mountain fortress looking out over israel and jordan and have a life-altering moment of realization.
but happen it did.
it took a little while for me to figure out what i was supposed to do, but i knew after that moment that the life i was returning to in just a week would never be the same. talking with everyone on the trip, i realized that i wasn't happy in my work or my love life or my life in general. it wasn't bad, but it wasn't the kind of person i wanted to be. i knew there was more to me than just commuting and work.
a year later, my life looks nothing like it did. i've moved 300 miles from home to a new city, taken a new job, made new friends, learned new things i've never done before, returned to the stage, and [finally] written a new song. i've dated three different guys, all not the guy for me. and i've found myself enamored with a friend and i'm *still* trying to figure out if he feels the same way or has figured out how i feel or what.
2006 was really the year my life started. i stopped being miserable from the aftermath of Dan, and i started really living life for ME. people always say, "you have to learn to love yourself before you can love anyone else." and they're totally right. i really like the person i've become here. i feel the most like myself than i have in a long time. i have inspirations and desires and driving forces i never knew i had. and i've got a fantastic group of friends that i can hardly imagine being here in DC without.
the word of the year for 2007?
hopeful.
for work, for friends, for fun, for love, for life.
so hopeful.
